I am Teacher Tarsha, an early education professional, a former k-12 teacher / administrator, but most importantly a mother. Bonita the Bumble Bee is a product of all these things. Going through a pandemic is challenging, to say the least, for children but also for us as parents, guardians, teachers, and grown up people. What I have discovered is that children are just tiny people. They are experiencing the pandemic just like us only with less experience and understanding.
I created Bonita the Bumble Bee to bridge the communication gap between tiny people and us. There are a lot of articles out there that explain how they take cues from our actions to figure out how they should respond (I’ve linked them below in case you are interested.) But the truth is we are all trying to figure it out day by day and minute by minute, and that is okay! More importantly it is okay for us to share our journey with them. Bonita the Bumble helps take some of the anxiety and guesswork out of these moments.
Every page of Bonita’s first book, Bonita the Bumble Bee and the Quarantine, is an opportunity to talk about different aspects of what we are going through during the pandemic. She addresses everything children are experiencing, from emotions and temperature checks to effects of unemployment and social distancing. While this may sound like a lot, Bonita does it in a way that tiny people can relate to, even though they may not have the words.
Subscribe to this blog and go on this adventure with Bonita the Bumble Bee and me as we all learn to navigate the new normal together.
